Dick Medve, artist extraordinaire, hand carved this beautiful, very high quality Koa wood authentic replica of a traditional Hawaiian paddle. It measures approximately 62” by 12” wide and comes with a hand carved Koa wall hook. The beauty of this wood is exceptional and Dick is a master carver. The center paddle is carved from a single piece of rare Koa wood, with reinforcements added to the handle for strength.

Koa wood, endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, is prized for it’s beauty and elegance in color and strength. It is one of Hawaii's largest native trees, and found primarily on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, Maui and Oahu. Koa trees can mature to have trunks 6 feet in diameter and stand 100 feet tall. These giant Koa's are occasionally seen in the few virgin Koa forests that survive today in the mountains on the island of Hawaii. The wood is medium to dark brown with dark grain and sometimes having wavy or curly golden reflections. The curly (or compression) Koa is more prized for decorative pieces.
