Information about Tiagra
Shimano Corporation has been making reels since the end of the 70's. That's almost 30 years of research and development. All that expertise has been loaded into the Tiagra A model this year for the 2005 series. This new reel is an upgraded version and they put all the bells and whistles in this one. This reel has not received a major overhaul since it's first release in 1993. The new ergonomic handle, permalube grease, chrome plated screws, and ratcheting drag system have put this reel miles ahead of the competition. The folks at Shimano really knew what they were doing when they redesigned the handle for the new model. They solved a few key concerns with the stability of the previous design's handle. For starters the new barrel shaped offset handle will allow anglers to "straighten" their hand position into a more ergonomic grip, this will let them put a little more cranking pressure on the fish.
The innards of the reel have been changed up a bit as well. They have added a twin-disk waterproof drag system and new anti-rust bearings. They still have a two-speed gearing quick change setup for heavy loads and light retrieval. This new reel is a force to be reckoned with. The machined aluminum casing is as durable as ever and there is an optional "Marlin cam" available. The Tiagra A line is available in 20, 30, 30-WLRS, 50, 50-wide, 50-WLRS, 80-wide, and 130 models, and you can expect to see prices to range from $489 to $1,199.

More on Tiagra Reels
Shimano makes some of the best reels in the industry. Their research and development team stays on top of all the current technological advances and integrates them so well into the product line. According to the IGFA records books, more record big game fish were caught using Shimano
reels. That has got to say something about how well shimano puts a reel together. The Tiagra Reels are considered the top of the line for Shimano. All of the best features of Shimano come together to make an industrial strength fishing machine. The anodized machined aluminum casing and the offset ergonomically designed handle are just what you see on the outside, the real goodies are the parts you don't see.
Shimano incorporates a specially treated stainless steel ball bearing system which is 10 times more resistant to corrosion than the standard ball bearing. "Permalube" is also used to maintain durability and protection of the moving inner workings of the reel. Another great feature that Shimano is installing on several models is a ratcheting drag lever, this keeps the drag from backing off due to boat vibrations and also allows for a more precise drag adjustment. 2-speed gearing is another very useful feature that can be utilized even under a load. This makes fighting fish even easier.
No matter which of the Tiagra Reels you choose, you can be confident that you are getting the best that Shimano has to offer. Shimano has been a major player in the fishing industry for almost 30 years since the release of their first Bantam series reels in 1978. They continue to grow and expand their line of reels almost guaranteeing that you can find a Shimano reel for any budget.
